It is the first, precious sighting of 2025 of the bull ray, a rare, protected and critically endangered eagle ray! A special sighting, the first to come from Mortoriotto, Sardinia, thanks to the staff of the Centro Sub Portorotondo, who went into the water specifically to monitor sharks and rays for LIFE European Sharks. Watch the video!
This eagle ray can grow enormous—over two and a half meters in wingspan—and is unmistakable for its protruding snout (hence the name “duckbill eagle ray”) and because it has beautiful blue waves on its back, which are very characteristic and can disappear with age.
Thanks not only to the staff of Centro Sub Portorotondo, but also to Lush Italia for itd support for these specific monitoring trips, in areas where the information gathered by divers is revealing important areas for sharks and rays and providing unique data that science alone could not obtain.
