Thumbs up to the crew of the Italian Coast Guard of Reggio Calabria for releasing this sixgill shark that got caught in an illegal net. This is a really important rescue because, according to IUCN the World’s Conservation Union, the Strait of Messina is a key area for the survival of this species – an Important Shark and Ray Area (ISRA)
The Coast Guard is a partner in the LIFE European Sharks project for the protection of sharks and rays.
